Where small furry rodents roam free.

This is my little pied-a-terre on the web where I can give my 2 euro-cents about the world.
Feel free to roam around, everything here is cool.

GabeWhat I'm doing with my life:

I currently attend the INSA Lyon engineering school in Lyon, France. This means that I spend my days doing math and Computer Science.  It’s as fun as it sounds.  If it’s still fall 2009, then I’m living in Chennai, India attending IIT for a semester. I fence and have the (mis)fortune of being a unix junkie. Sometimes I wish I could just inject binary into my veins, but it’s most likely all for the better that I can’t.

Who I am: I have the good fortune of being a citizen of both France and America. I currently live in Lyon, France.  It’s quite fun even if I miss the snowy winters of New England.  I therefore speak both French and English fluently with a decent smattering of Spanish when necessary. I travel a lot, having visited such awesome places as the USA, France, Austria, Slovakia, Ireland, Switzerland, Mauritius, Spain, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Japan, India, Madagascar and the obligatory Mexico, Canada and various Carribean Islands.

Fencing: I fenced epee at the national circuit level, but haven’t seriously competed since high school.  I was at the Venissieux fencing club for 2 years, but now I just fence a couple university competitions and the Polytechnique Paris competition.  I started Rugby in 2007 and I enjoy the sport quite a bit even if I’m not all that great at it :-P .

Linux, Coding: After a few tries at this whole ‘linux’ deal, this guy who worked at a coffee shop with me for about 1 week when I was 14 suggested I try out gentoo. Gentoo is awesome. (Gentoo was awesome when I was 14 and bored, I now use Ubuntu or Debian, which ‘just works’ yet still allowes me the full enjoyment of a GNU/Linux system.) In my first week with about a half-dozen re-installs due to my amazing skills at breaking things, I learned my way around the bash shell and a linux system pretty well. Insert about 6 years of messing around, and I run an all-linux shop for development and general use.  I have a rack in my parents’ basement, although now most of my servers are in colo.  I’ve been writing web app backends for a while now, along with content spiders for getting information.  I have fun writing embedded C for AVRs.  I’m a huge fan of Python and I accept PHP.  My RDBMS of choice is MySQL but I love SQLite.  I’m not a huge Java fan, but things can change.

Favorites:
BASH, Ubuntu, Gnome, IBM X61s, Atmel AVRs, Python, C/C++, Bicycles
